Fraberts Turns Five!

Save the Date
Fraberts’ 5th Birthday Party
Saturday, May 25
Samples and demos from some of our favourite suppliers as well as our own tasty products!

To celebrate this significant milestone in the retail business, we are holding a draw…

Why do you shop at Fraberts?

Tell us why you and your family shop at Fraberts Fresh Food – we will compile the entries and come up with “The Top 5 Reasons to Shop at Fraberts”, to celebrate 5 years of fantastic food in downtown Fergus.  Every entry will get you a ballot to win $50 in Fraberts bucks for free groceries!  Yes that’s right, you can enter more than once (we know there are tonnes of great reasons, but we must limit you to 5…).

Why do you shop at Fraberts?  Post it on our Facebook page, email it to me at, or write it down and bring it to the store.

And spring has finally arrived…

…which means asparagus, spinach, fiddleheads and BBQ season.  Haven’t tried our own store made sausage yet?  They are delicious on your barbecue – as are our well -aged steaks from Harriston Packers, fresh chicken from Abate Packers in Arthur, yummy hot dogs from Schinkel’s Legacy….

Elora Farmers Market

The Elora Farmers Market has begun its summer season at Bissell Park in Elora every Saturday from 9am till 1pm.  Come see us there!

Fresh Local Turkeys

Order your fresh, local turkey by Friday, December 14 to avoid disappointment – raised on family farms in the Cambridge and Exeter area, our turkeys receive rave reviews every holiday!  All sizes available.  For every turkey ordered this Christmas, Fraberts will donate $1 to the Groves Hospital Foundation as part of the Fergus Believes in Santa campaign!  We can also bring in roasts, chickens, lamb, pork – you name it, we will find it for you.  Chef Derek also makes a delicious tofu loaf for the vegetarians in your family.

Chefs Derek and Jay can help with any part or all of Christmas dinner so you can focus on what’s important – enjoying time with family and friends.  They can roast the turkey for you, make the gravy, stuffing, roasted veggies, mashed potatoes, or whatever else you can think of.  No turkey dinner in the Fergus area is complete without our famous Drunken Cranberry Sauce.

Our pies have become famous – order ahead to avoid disappointment, but there will be lots on hand throughout December.

Fergus Believes in Santa!

In the spirit of Christmas giving, contribute to the Groves Hospital Foundation through the “Fergus Believes in Santa” campaign presented by Vision Theatre Productions and the Fergus BIA.  Look for “I Believe in Santa” pins on sale throughout Fergus and visit for more information on other participating merchants.

Celebrate the Harvest!

September 13

Celebrate the Harvest at Fraberts
Fall is a great time to eat local – lots of delicious local bounty such as apples, everbearing strawberries and raspberries, sweet corn, squash, tomatoes and much, much more to choose from. Celebrate the harvest with us on Saturday, September 29 at our annual Harvest Festival.  From 11am – 4pm we will have free samples and some of our wonderful suppliers on hand to discuss their products.  We are just one stop of many in this year’s Rural Romp – visit for more information on the Romp.
Thanksgiving is Around the Corner…
Be prepared – Thanksgiving immediately follows our Harvest Festival on the weekend of October 5-8!  Order your turkey or other holiday food by Friday, September 28 to avoid disappointment.  Every year we receive rave reviews about our fresh, local turkey.  Looking for an alternative to turkey?  Ask us about beef or pork roasts, fresh chicken, ham, tofu loaves – whatever you need, we can probably help.  Need help with the meal?  Chefs Derek and Jay can help with all details – just call us at 226-383-7374 to order today.  Don’t forget the pie!  Pumpkin, apple, red/black currant, blueberry, raspberry…order ahead to get your favourite!

Sheldon Creek Dairy
Our dairy selection is expanding again with the addition of Sheldon Creek fresh whole milk products.  Their cream-top milk is natural and nutritious, because they believe in doing less – not more – when it comes to milk.  They pasteurize their milk at the lowest temperature possible – 73 degrees for just 16 seconds, then bottled for your enjoyment.  Their milk is not homogenized, so the milk naturally separates into milk and cream, just like in the old days.  Shake the cream into the milk, drink it or skim it off and enjoy in your cooking. We also have their whole fresh dark chocolate milk and greek style whole milk yogurt.  Try some today!
Staff News!
Congratulations to John who married Cathy after a mere 17 years together.  All the best to the happy couple!

Golden Guernsey Milk Comes to Fraberts

Eby Manor is a generational family dairy farm near St. Jacobs in Waterloo County.  Their herd consists of Guernsey cattle which are known for their docile temperament and highly nutritious and flavorful milk. Some of the unique qualities of Guernsey milk are the high level of Beta Carotene, Omega 3, and A-2 Beta Casine (Protein). Their cows are let outside for sunshine, exercise and grazing in the morning when the weather is suitable.  Each cow has her own name and identity, and production records are kept on each animal. Their feed program is designed for producing milk with high nutrient quality rather than a focus on producing high volumes of milk. The health and longevity of their cows is a high priority for them. Currently they have cows in their herd that are 12 to 14 years of age are still productive and in excellent health. Like all Canadian dairy farmers, they do not use hormone additives or treatments to promote growth or milk production. Antibiotics are used only when absolutely necessary to treat an infection or serious illness. Very strict protocols are followed after any animal has been treated and records are maintained following the treatment. All milk from treated animals is discarded until the milk is free of antibiotic residue. The Eby’s believe that every milk consumer can enjoy the rich full flavor of our Golden Guernsey milk with confidence that it is truly a safe and nutritious choice. ENJOY! Editors note – our family loves this milk – it is rich and there really is something about milk in a glass jar….and I grew up drinking unprocessed milk on a Holstein farm so this is saying something!

Fergus Library Expansion and BIA Downtown Riverwalk Beautification

We are starting to see draft drawings of how downtown Fergus could look after our library is expanded and landscaping along the river is done – it will be spectacular!  Check it out for yourself tomorrow night at the Township’s public meeting – Wednesday, June 27, from 6:30 to 8:30at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

Join us to celebrate!

May 20

Celebrate Four Years of Fresh Food at Fraberts

Wow – hard to believe it was only four years ago when Chef Derek and I were eagerly anticipating the arrival of our first baby – and the beginning of our other dream – a local fresh food market.  In May of 2008 we opened the doors of Fraberts Fresh Food – and a few short weeks later Charlotte was born.
Charlotte skates, plays lacrosse, talks your ear off and starts school this fall.  Fraberts has doubled in size.  And along the way Charlotte’s little sister, Emily, was born and we moved from our farm outside of town into downtown Fergus.  It’s been a whirlwind four years and we have loved every moment of it.
Please celebrate with us on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 as Fraberts Turns Four!  From 11am till 2pm we will be offering samples and will have a few suppliers and local farmers on hand to talk about their delicious products.
92.9 The Grand – our local radio station – will be here to help us celebrate from 10am till 2pm on Saturday!
A LOT has changed here at Fraberts – try our new pizzas, the talk of the town!  We now have a full service deli counter with sandwiches and salads to go, a local meat counter, and a much expanded selection of gourmet and gluten free foods.  Chef Derek’s ready-made meals help you feel good about dinner on the run.  And our produce selection remains a source of pride.  Lots of local produce starting up – delicious asparagus, rhubarb, spinach, fiddleheads, and our famous Floralane tomatoes.
Just in!  Ontario strawberries are here!  First batch sold out within hours on Friday – I will be getting more on Tuesday.  Stay tuned via Facebook and/or Twitter!

Holiday Weekend Hours

We are open all weekend to meet your holiday entertaining needs!  The meat counter is stocked with the best local meat in town for your BBQ and we have lots of great salads to make your weekend more delicious and relaxing.  Let Chef Derek help you get out of the kitchen to enjoy this fantastic weather!  We’re open from 10-5 both today (Sunday) and holiday Monday.

Local Food Dinner

The Wellington Centre for Sustainable Agriculture is presenting a fundraising dinner featuring Jeff Crump, Executive Chef of the Ancaster Old Mill.  It will be held at the Elora Legion Community Hall on Thursday, May 31.  Chef Crump will work with the chefs and students of The Food School at CWDHS to deliver a menu focussing on the spring season and highlighting many of our best local farmers.  Join us in supporting this terrific event!  Tickets are $50 and available at Fraberts.  Visit for more information.

Produce Storage Tip

A gas called ethylene is emitted by all fruits and vegetables and it speeds up the ripening process.  High emitters include apples, apricots, avocados, unripe bananas, cantaloupes, figs, nectarines, peaches, plums, and tomatoes.  The good news is, if you need to ripen a banana or avocado, simply wrap it up in newspaper with a high emitter (apples work well) to speed up ripening.  The bad news – fruits and veggies will deteriorate more quickly if stored with a high emitter.  Keep this in mind when deciding where to store high emitters in your fridge.

At Fraberts we cover our apples every night before pushing the bankettes into the cooler – this not only keeps our beautifully pyrimid-piled apples from falling off the bankette during the trip to the cooler, it keeps our produce in the cooler fresh!

Asparagus is Here!

April 25

Ontario Asparagus is Here!

Never mind the weather…the taste of spring has arrived!  I proudly scored the first Ontario asparagus of the year this morning at the market.  Grill it, steam it, put it in a salad…..this is what we wait all winter for!

Organic Milk in Glass Bottles

You’ve been asking – we’ve been listening!  We finally have Organic Meadow milk in glass bottles.  We are very proud to now carry local milk from Steen’s Dairy – everything from skim to whole and chocolate too.  We also now carry Organic Meadow kefir.

BBQ Season?

Should be starting soon!  We have the best local meat in town in our brand new meat counter – tasty chicken from Abate Packers, tender, aged steaks from Harriston Packers, and delicious sausages and pork products from Stonaleen Farms and Harriston Packers.  Chef Derek always has something interesting in the meat counter – check it out!

Lots of New Products

…too many to mention and many more in the works – keep coming back to see what’s new at Fraberts!

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13 – maybe Chef Derek can help you make dinner for mom?  Let us know.

Elora Farmers Market

Our summer market will start up at Bissell Park in Elora on Saturday, May 12.  It will run throughout the summer and fall at that location from 9am till 1pm every Saturday.  Fraberts will be there with seasonal local produce, flatbreads and dips, and other yummy treats!

…to Fraberts team member, Nicole Van den Borre!  Nicole was accepted into Teacher’s College at Laurier and will begin this fall – for those of you who shop Fraberts with children in tow, you already know how great she is with kids!
