One of our favourite growers is Boot’s Farm in beautiful Brant County. If you’ve enjoyed our fresh beans, field cucumbers, zucchini, gorgeous fresh basil, leeks, giant romaine, and/or squash then they are one of your favourites too!
John Boot immigrated from the Netherlands to Freelton (Flamborough) in the 1950’s. They started with a 24 acre farm there and have moved and grown to 600 acres near Scotland (Ontario).
John’s son, Bill, and Bill’s wife, Marianna, have been farming for over 35 years. Sadly, Bill passed away two years ago. He referred to me as “doll” down at the Food Terminal, which always made me smile at 5am when I was not feeling like much of a doll LOL!
Bill had grown up going to farmers’ markets and he passed on his love of farming to their three boys who have stepped in to take on leadership roles throughout the farm business. Their main seasonal crops are summer and winter squash, fresh market beans, and leeks as well as other types of vegetables such as kale, cucumbers, hot peppers, and herbs such as dill and basil.
Boot’s is now a third-generation family-run farm that believes in responsible stewardship, promoting biodiversity, and providing healthy food for future generations. We hope their delicious produce is part of your Thanksgiving dinner!
