It’s blueberry season in Ontario and we are please to offer both wild (lowbush) and cultivated (highbush) blueberries at Fraberts.

Wild blueberries are harvested from forests or farms in northern Ontario, Quebec, or the Maritimes.  They are much smaller in size and therefore have a higher skin-to-pulp ratio than cultivated blueberries. More skin and less water means more intense blueberry flavor, more antioxidant-rich pigment (anthocyanins), and more fiber. Less water also means that wild blueberries are better for baking.

Cultivated blueberries were developed from wild blueberries in 1911 in New Jersey.  They have higher yields and are easier to harvest than wild blueberries and therefore are more widely available at a lower cost.

There has been a great deal of research on the health benefits of blueberries, especially wild blueberries, from heart health to brain function.

Fun fact: wild blueberries are the #1 exported fruit in Canada!
