Beat the Winter Blues at Fraberts Fresh Food
Fraberts Food For Thought – February, 2009

Fresh Food Drive a Success

Thanks to your generosity, we will be providing $600 in fresh produce (nearly $300 from you, our customers, which we matched) to the Centre Wellington Food Bank. To date we have provided 200 pounds of apples, 200 pounds of sweet potatoes, 100 pounds of carrots, 100 pounds of oranges, and 50 pounds of onions. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the Christmas Fresh Food Drive, we think we can continue to provide fresh fruit and veggies until we begin the Easter Fresh Food Drive. Thanks for supporting those in need in our own community during these tough times.

Soup for Starters

Join Chef Derek and learn how to make your own yummy soups from scratch! On Wednesday, February 25 from 7pm to 9pm, we will offer our first cooking class. The cost is $30 per person, which includes a fun night with others learning to make soup, sampling, ingredients, and two soups for you to take home. Space is limited to the first 10 who register so call us right away – 226-383-7374 (a local call).

Winter Warmer

Beat the winter blues and join Fraberts Fresh Food to sample warm soup and comforting dishes as we launch our winter menu on Saturday, February 21. From noon till 3pm we will be offering free samples for you to try out.

Valentines Day

Want to really impress your beloved on Valentines Day on Saturday, February 14? Plan a romantic night in with some of Chef Derek’s yummy ready made meals or show off your own gourmet skills and order duck, lamb, goose, or a fabulous beef or pork roast. We can help you choose just the right wine to pair with your chosen dish. Make the evening more glamorous with a gourmet cheese plate for two.

Family Day

Monday, February 16 is Family Day. How do you celebrate with your family? Why not start a tradition of a favourite family dinner, prepared by the whole family (or with help from Chef Derek)? Let us know how we can help.

What’s with the 226 phone number?

In a nutshell, “226” is the new “519”. In accordance with our pledge to support local, we are with local telecom company, Wightman, who assigns 226 phone numbers. It is a local call. It does not go to our “head office in the U.S.” (our “head office” is on Sideroad 30, just south of Belwood Lake.) So call us any time at 226-383-7374 – it won’t cost you anything!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Jim Carter, a Fraberts regular, who won the Fergus BIA Christmas draw for $500 “BIA Bucks” with a ballot from Fraberts. Shopping at Fraberts is not only delicious and fun, it’s also good luck!

Fraberts Family Profile

Every month we will provide a profile of a member of the Fraberts family – one of our gourmet food suppliers or a local farmer. To kick off our “family profile” I’d like to introduce you to our very own Chef Derek Roberts.

Derek grew up in Timmins and has always loved cooking. After working as an aquatic toxicologist for an environmental consulting firm for years (Editors note: where he met his lovely wife), he finally decided to pursue this passion. He studied Culinary Arts at the Culinary Arts School of Ontario in 2005 and graduated at the top of his class. He worked at the Kingbridge Centre in King City and then the Breadalbane right here in Fergus before taking the leap into starting his own business. Chef Derek is passionate about creating “comfort food” – meals that families can enjoy any time – using local, fresh, quality ingredients. He is especially proud of his made-from-scratch soups. Derek loves interacting with you, our valuable customers, to help you provide delicious, wholesome meals for your family. He also loves to help with special occasions – either by catering, or helping you source the perfect ingredients. If you ever have questions about how to prepare something or are looking for tips – just pop your head into Derek’s kitchen next time you are in the store or call him at 226-383-7374.
