Feeling the winter blues? Stuck in a culinary rut? Kids won’t eat your food no matter how much ketchup you put on it? Then this event is for you.

Fraberts is co-hosting a real food forum and information night at James McQueen Public School on Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 7-8 pm

Hot on the heels of the success of several healthy food initiatives currently underway at the school, Greener McQueen has partnered with Fraberts Fresh Food and local dietician Amy Waugh to host a Real Food Forum and Information Night for Parents.

An offshoot of parent council, Greener McQueen is a group of parents from the school community whose aim is getting kids excited and involved in all aspects of their environment.

The goal of the evening is to help families make healthy food that is both quick and easy to prepare, doesn’t break the budget, and encourages the kids to get in the kitchen and get cooking.

Busy parents themselves, Jackie Fraser and Derek Roberts of Fraberts understand the challenges of eating well on the go. Both will be there to talk about the ease and benefits of using fresh foods and both will be available to answer questions following the talk. Local dietician and mother Amy Waugh RD, CDE from Upper Grand Family Health Team will also be on hand to discuss various issues around children’s dietary requirements, how to handle those picky eaters, healthy school lunch ideas and more.

The free event is open to the entire community.

“We really want to emphasise this is a community event,” says parent council member Shona Litchfield. “We all have to cook dinner and we can all use some new tips and fresh advice. We’re thrilled to be able to host this night which will benefit all children and parents in the community.”

And if you’re still undecided, there are plenty of samples, door prizes and giveaways all with a kid/healthy eating related theme. James McQueen School is located in the heart of downtown Fergus at 365 St George Street.

Funding for this event was provided by the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Parents Reaching Out Grant which funds school-based initiatives to support and enhance parental involvement in education. Greener McQueen is just one of the many health/environmental projects underway and ongoing at the school.

Thanks to the hard work of principal John Cassano along with enthusiastic staff, volunteers and students, the school has not only greened up their school yard with new play equipment, lawn areas and shade trees, it also operates a successful Food & Friends program providing healthy snacks to all children twice weekly, a compost/recycling program and involvement in In Motion’s 3 up, 2 down initiative.
