…which means asparagus, spinach, fiddleheads and BBQ season.  Haven’t tried our own store made sausage yet?  They are delicious on your barbecue – as are our well -aged steaks from Harriston Packers, fresh chicken from Abate Packers in Arthur, yummy hot dogs from Schinkel’s Legacy….

Celebrate the Harvest!

Celebrate the Harvest at Fraberts
Fall is a great time to eat local – lots of delicious local bounty such as apples, everbearing strawberries and raspberries, sweet corn, squash, tomatoes and much, much more to choose from. Celebrate the harvest with us on Saturday, September 29 at our annual Harvest Festival.  From 11am – 4pm we will have free samples and some of our wonderful suppliers on hand to discuss their products.  We are just one stop of many in this year’s Rural Romp – visit www.guelphwellingtonlocalfood.ca/wellington-rural-romp for more information on the Romp.
Thanksgiving is Around the Corner…
Be prepared – Thanksgiving immediately follows our Harvest Festival on the weekend of October 5-8!  Order your turkey or other holiday food by Friday, September 28 to avoid disappointment.  Every year we receive rave reviews about our fresh, local turkey.  Looking for an alternative to turkey?  Ask us about beef or pork roasts, fresh chicken, ham, tofu loaves – whatever you need, we can probably help.  Need help with the meal?  Chefs Derek and Jay can help with all details – just call us at 226-383-7374 to order today.  Don’t forget the pie!  Pumpkin, apple, red/black currant, blueberry, raspberry…order ahead to get your favourite!

Sheldon Creek Dairy
Our dairy selection is expanding again with the addition of Sheldon Creek fresh whole milk products.  Their cream-top milk is natural and nutritious, because they believe in doing less – not more – when it comes to milk.  They pasteurize their milk at the lowest temperature possible – 73 degrees for just 16 seconds, then bottled for your enjoyment.  Their milk is not homogenized, so the milk naturally separates into milk and cream, just like in the old days.  Shake the cream into the milk, drink it or skim it off and enjoy in your cooking. We also have their whole fresh dark chocolate milk and greek style whole milk yogurt.  Try some today!

Celebrate Four Years of Fresh Food at Fraberts

Wow – hard to believe it was only four years ago when Chef Derek and I were eagerly anticipating the arrival of our first baby – and the beginning of our other dream – a local fresh food market.  In May of 2008 we opened the doors of Fraberts Fresh Food – and a few short weeks later Charlotte was born.
Charlotte skates, plays lacrosse, talks your ear off and starts school this fall.  Fraberts has doubled in size.  And along the way Charlotte’s little sister, Emily, was born and we moved from our farm outside of town into downtown Fergus.  It’s been a whirlwind four years and we have loved every moment of it.
Please celebrate with us on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 as Fraberts Turns Four!  From 11am till 2pm we will be offering samples and will have a few suppliers and local farmers on hand to talk about their delicious products.
92.9 The Grand – our local radio station – will be here to help us celebrate from 10am till 2pm on Saturday!
A LOT has changed here at Fraberts – try our new pizzas, the talk of the town!  We now have a full service deli counter with sandwiches and salads to go, a local meat counter, and a much expanded selection of gourmet and gluten free foods.  Chef Derek’s ready-made meals help you feel good about dinner on the run.  And our produce selection remains a source of pride.  Lots of local produce starting up – delicious asparagus, rhubarb, spinach, fiddleheads, and our famous Floralane tomatoes.
Just in!  Ontario strawberries are here!  First batch sold out within hours on Friday – I will be getting more on Tuesday.  Stay tuned via Facebook and/or Twitter!

Holiday Weekend Hours

We are open all weekend to meet your holiday entertaining needs!  The meat counter is stocked with the best local meat in town for your BBQ and we have lots of great salads to make your weekend more delicious and relaxing.  Let Chef Derek help you get out of the kitchen to enjoy this fantastic weather!  We’re open from 10-5 both today (Sunday) and holiday Monday.

Local Food Dinner

The Wellington Centre for Sustainable Agriculture is presenting a fundraising dinner featuring Jeff Crump, Executive Chef of the Ancaster Old Mill.  It will be held at the Elora Legion Community Hall on Thursday, May 31.  Chef Crump will work with the chefs and students of The Food School at CWDHS to deliver a menu focussing on the spring season and highlighting many of our best local farmers.  Join us in supporting this terrific event!  Tickets are $50 and available at Fraberts.  Visit www.wellingtoncsa.com for more information.

Produce Storage Tip

A gas called ethylene is emitted by all fruits and vegetables and it speeds up the ripening process.  High emitters include apples, apricots, avocados, unripe bananas, cantaloupes, figs, nectarines, peaches, plums, and tomatoes.  The good news is, if you need to ripen a banana or avocado, simply wrap it up in newspaper with a high emitter (apples work well) to speed up ripening.  The bad news – fruits and veggies will deteriorate more quickly if stored with a high emitter.  Keep this in mind when deciding where to store high emitters in your fridge.

At Fraberts we cover our apples every night before pushing the bankettes into the cooler – this not only keeps our beautifully pyrimid-piled apples from falling off the bankette during the trip to the cooler, it keeps our produce in the cooler fresh!

Merry Christmas from Fraberts

Tree Lighting Tonight – 7:00-7:30pm

Tonight we light our downtown Christmas Tree!  It has been decorated lovingly by the kids in the various library programs at the Fergus Library (Charlotte and Emily made a handful each in their “Wee Busy Bees” program).  The Centre Wellington Singers will be carolling and Fraberts is providing hot apple cider.  In true Fergus style, we will pipe on the lights shortly after 7pm.  Join us in front of the library!

Santa Claus Parade Tomorrow – December 3

Santa Claus is coming to town tomorrow!  Join us as the new route comes right by our store this year.  Parade starts at AO Smith at 1:30 and should be arriving along our street around 2pm.  We will be offering free soup to warm you up!

Christmas Customer Appreciation – December 16

You are invited to our Christmas Customer Appreciation night on Friday, December 16 from 5-9pm.  Free samples, hot apple cider, and maybe a sneak peak at our expansion!  All of Fergus will be alive that night with Moonlight Madness late night shopping  - join us!

Celebrate 3 Years of Fresh Food

We’re Three Years Old!

As always, our lean local ground beef is $2.99/lb.  Our store slow roasted beef, pork loin, and Harriston Packers black forest ham is $6.49/lb, which is $1.43/100 grams.  Best price and quality in town!  On sale while supplies last – beef tenderloin is $15.99/lb or $17.99/lb cut into steaks.

Congratulations to Awards of Excellence Winners!

We’d like to congratulate all of the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence winners which were announced last week.  We want to especially congratulate our neighbours, Grand River Running on their double win – Customer Service Excellence and Corporate Citizen of the Year!  We are inspired by both 98 year old Citizen of the Year, Loiuse Goldsmith, and Youth Citizen of the Year, environmentalist Sarah Henneken.   We are also proud to pass on the title “Small Business of the Year” to our very own computer saviours, Planet CPU.
