Summer Really is Here – Honest!
Fraberts Fresh Food for Thought – August 2009

Celebrate Food Day Canada – August 1, 2009

Be sure to celebrate our wonderful local food by attending the Food Day Canada event at the Grand River Raceway on August 1 from 5-8pm, or celebrate with family and friends at home with your own meal featuring delicious local food.  Fraberts can help with everything from local meat for the BBQ to local veggies, sweet corn, potatoes, salads, and fruit for dessert.  For more information, visit www.flavoursofcanada.ca.

Ontario Sweet Corn, Peaches, Blueberries, Cherries, etc, etc.

I know, the weather would have you thinking differently – however summer really is continuing on.  Our own local sweet corn is going to be late due to the cool weather, however we do have Ontario sweet corn from the Simcoe area and it is delicious!  Ontario peaches and blueberries have also arrived, as well as tonnes of local veggies.  Virtually everything in the store is from within 100 miles of Fergus – it’s a great time of year for eating local!

Fraberts Ready Made Meals

Chef Derek phased out a few favourites for the summer, when BBQ season overtook the need for soups and stews.  Later this month, as fall approaches (I know, how about summer starting first?) these favourites will return to the shelves.

Fraberts Cooking Classes

Back by popular demand, we will plan for more cooking classes this fall.  Have a suggestion for a topic?  Let us know!

Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games Weekend – August 7-9

Need a break from the festival grounds?  There are lots of things to do at the Fergus Marketplace and throughout downtown. Stop by Fraberts to see what tasty nibblies we have out front on Saturday and Sunday.  On Friday and Saturday from noon-3pm, Blackthorn Productions will be engaging in medieval play and sword re-enactments at BT Corner, just across the street from us.  Meet and greet with the Campbell Brothers – the dynamic brother duo of the Celtic punk band “Mudmen” – at the Wee Scottish Shop from 3-4pm on Friday.  Enjoy Scottish vendors and craftspeople located at the Fergus Marketplace on Saturday.  Live music and piping at the Marketplace and throughout downtown from 1 till 4pm on Friday and Saturday

Special Orders Welcome

It appears that many people are getting back to home canning, freezing and other forms of preserving our wonderful local bounty.  Sales of Mason jars have doubled over the past few years.  Let me know if you need bulk supplies of fruits or veggies for preserving.  Right now is a great time to do pickles or frozen peas, beans, etc.  Give me a call or send an email along and I’ll see what I can find for you.

Take Fraberts on Holidays!

Going to a cottage or on a camping holiday this month?  Take some Fraberts favourites with you – flatbreads and dip, nachos and salsa, Chef Derek’s new Ultimate Nacho Dip, delicious meat and kebabs for the BBQ, fresh local fruit and veggies, or ready made meals to keep it simple.  Let Fraberts make your holiday yummy!
